Passport Legislation Gets Needed Postponement
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation that withholds $100M from the Department of Homeland Security for the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). The immediate impact on Rocky Point is that the deadline for mandatory passports has been pushed forward to June 1, 2008. The U.S. Senate has yet to vote on the bill, but the impact of the legislation has already forced the DHS to admit that it is not prepared to implement the new regulations. Once the Senate votes on the bill, (it is expected to pass) the deadline will be pushed another 12 months to June 1, 2009.
